Obama for ‘Skins Coach?
Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton leads Barack Obama by fewer than 100 delegates, but it looks like Obama is raising more money.
As Red Zone Blogitics has observed, because of his status as an athlete and football fan, Obama seems to be developing an edge with men that Clinton cannot hope to equal. Obama very astutely took out a television ad during the Super Bowl, and today I heard one of his radio spots on ESPN Radio.
Obama is definitely going for the guy vote, and he may be the first Democratic candidate in a long time who actually has credibility with men. The most visible sign of that yet came when I heard ESPN commentator Bram Weinstein declare today that maybe the Washington Redskins should hire Obama as their next coach.
I called in to the show, and Weinstein very graciously took my call and allowed me to plug redzonepolitics.com. I suggested the ’Skins take a look at former Chicago Bears defender Mike Singletary. I think owner Dan Snyder should try something different and look at more black candidates.
But I also think, as many do and few dare say, that Snyder is the obstacle to his own search for a coach. Showing how unproductive having an inner control freak can be, he’s already hired two coordinators when everyone knows that any pro football coach worth his salt expects to put his own people in place.
From the way this coaching search has gone, with high-profile guys veering away from the opportunity as if avoiding an accident, is Snyder kryptonite to NFL coaching candidates? Giants’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, one of Snyder’s targets, has chosen to stick with a winner and stay in New York – no surprises there.
As the sun was setting Friday, it looked like former Giants coach Jim Fassel was becoming the final “front runner” for the ‘Skins.
We’ll see who is truly willing to work UNDER Snyder — and whether the owner realizes that it may be time to adopt a different business model: one based on understanding people. The longer the ‘Skins remain without a head coach, the greater the humiliation for Redskins Nation and the worse the implications for team morale.
